Democracy was once taught and thought to be as ‘government of the people, by the people, for the people’, this was employed for a description of a thing as sacrosanct as Bible by John Wycliffe in the prologue to his translation of the Bible, “The Bible is for the government of the people, by the people, and for the people” in 1384.

Sometimes, the description in the founding documents stand in striking contrast to its counterparts in existing reality. The prevalent atrocities in the democratic demography bears testimony of the former sentence. With recurrent encounters which disturbs the notion of democracy holds the potential to convert the largest democracy in the world to the greatest experiment in democracy.

A country which felicitates ‘unity in diversity’ and is premised on its Constitution witnesses brutal slay , everyday, of it’s beloved possessions. From barbaric lynching in the name of holy religion to ministers denying any such incident when faced with questions. From denial of fairness to a rape victim to FIR against those writing grievances to the system.

From varsities holding national importance being labeled as ‘anti-national’ to blocking criticism through fake news with pseudo rationals. From educational institutions protesting the absurd fee hike to farmers committing suicides and jobless From Hate crimes to hate speeches and hate messages with every phone chime and this ends with felicitating the doers of the crime with garlands and applauding rhyme.

The deductions display a very different aspect which has been long diverted. It is not the powerful that corrupts the institutions but power itself. Power’s organic inclination demands it to be checked and rechecked and this is the immortal idea behind the establishment of democracy.

Democracy can breathe and grow only if contentions are considered with kindness. Undeniable, when one encounters the prevalent failures of democratic institutions, becomes the fact that power is powerfully cruel.

“Men are cruel, but Man is kind” : Rabindranath Tagore

This dictate disputes the practice of placing faith in any ‘group’ or ‘party’ that has acquired the art of articulation and appeasement but urges to put the founding documents of the nation as a paramount entity.

Sometimes, intentions change, people change and shockingly, history too. Democracy can only be protected by the demography of the nation and handing it to the hands of anyone will only contribute to its exploitation.

Nationalism: A Paradox https://english.lokbharat.in/editorial/nationalism-a-paradox/ Sun, 17 Nov 2019 07:35:43 +0000 https://english.lokbharat.in/?p=879 By Gazal Khan

An attempt to define Nationalism, will let us into its principles and therefrom provide us a fertile ground for its analysis. The basic definition of Nationalism, as pronounced by Merriam Webster, is “devotion to the interests of a certain country and belief that it is better and more important than other countries”.

The premise of this concept appears absurd considering its definition, any hollow preconceived assumption of being “better than others” would and could only hamper the progress and development of the nation. This disposition can only afford to instill lethargy and haughtiness in the people making them aimless and unproductive. Hence, the “belief that it [any nation] is better and more important than others” can never function in the “ interest of a certain country”.

A deep contemplation finds the notion of Nationalism absolutely self-defeating. The impact of this belief holds a history of scars and catastrophes associated with nations. For instance, German Nationalism is an ideological notion which emphasizes and takes pride in the national identity of Germans.

“ I love my country too much to be a Nationalist “ : Albert Camus

The national way of thinking was the foundation that led Adolf Hitler execute his extreme form of Nationalism in Germany. The German Nationalism brought Germany the most destructive of all disasters, World War ll. Not just loss of lives and economy as the repercussion of its Nationalism, but Germany also paid reparations to the United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union, mainly in the form of dismantled factories, forced labor and coal.

The German standard of living was reduced to its 1932 level. Adolf Hitler is the unforgettable Nationalist the world has known. The very notion of destruction of Germany attached to his name reiterates the self contradictory nature of Nationalism.

Other striking principle of Nationalism is that it aims “to build and maintain a single national identity based on ‘shared’ social characteristics such as culture, language, religion, politics, and belief in a shared singular history- and to promote national unity and solidarity.”

National identity, in historical terms, is a recent phenomenon which is absolutely alienating and exclusive promoting hatred and malice amongst humans. Firstly, The very fact that there can be no one’ identity for a nation populated with different people reveals the loophole of this very idea.

Secondly, the cultural identity or religious identity does not necessarily find a place in ‘National identity’. Thirdly, This concept of ‘National identity’ instills antipathy amongst people [of the nation] for immigrants.

A fine example of this would be to quote Donald Trump, a Nationalist, “Undocumented immigrants are not people; they are animals”.

This exclusivity, malice, contempt, and confusion can never bring peace and harmony to the nation. The very concept of ‘national identity’ collapses for a country like India which is not considered a nation, a group of people who share a common history, culture, and tradition.

Hence, the principle of ‘building and maintaining a single national identity’ is proved impractical and absurd.

Nationalism is often identified as a “form of love, Not hate” ,which is advocated by many supporters of Nationalism, Rich Lowry being a prominent person of them. The most striking feature of this kind of love is that it promotes violence which is accompanied by horrendous carnage.

Charles Tilly (1992) and Michail Mann(1986) offer the most systematic account of the role of ‘war’ in the genesis of the modern nation-state. Nationalism has been closely associated with the most destructive wars of human history, the revisionist states responsible for initiating both the First and Second World Wars have historically been examined as the dangers of Nationalism. ‘ Nationalism and War’ by John Hulchinson explores and exposes the unbeautiful actualities of War beautifully.

Many theories claim or imply that wars result ultimately from the allegiance of men to nations and from the intimate connection between the nation and the state The ideal of the nation-state is never fully achieved. In no historical case does one find all members of a specific nation gathered within one state’s boundary.

The presence of sizable minorities within the national boundaries can not be ignored and this correlation has frequently given rise to jeopardy which invites War. Hence, Nationalism appears destructive and hollow once it is analyzed and examined in a solemn manner.
